Saw Palmetto is a low growing palm tree found in the West Indies and in the coastal regions of the south eastern United States. It grows from 6 to 10 feet in height, with a crown of large leaves. Its berries are used as ingredients in herbal remedies.

Native Americans ate the saw palmetto berries in the belief that they are tonics for body nourishment, appetite stimulation and weight gain promotion. They also used the herb to treat urinary tract and genital system problems, including urinating trouble and frequent night time urination.

Uses of Saw Palmetto

Studies found that saw palmetto relieves some symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia a.k.a. BPH, or enlarged prostrate. These symptoms include difficult and frequent urination.

Chemicals in the berries of saw palmetto for prostrate called sterols interfere with the ability of hormones e.g. testosterone, to cause prostrate cells to grow.

Saw palmetto for prostrate health, by itself or with other herbs, is promoted as a treatment for prostrate cancer. However, no studies have shown that it can prevent or treat prostrate cancer as yet.

Saw palmetto is also believed to offer treatment for prostatitis a.k.a. inflamed prostrate gland as well as low thyroid function. Some proponents suggest it also increases sex drive and fertility.
