Enlarged Prostate

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Enlarged Prostate treated with Prostate Artery Embolization and medicated with ProstacetBenign Prostatic Hyperplasia a.k.a. BPH is a condition in which there is an enlarged prostrate that is not cancerous.

In the US, BPH affects more than 50% of men aged 60 and older and more than 80% of men aged 80 and over.

Enlarged Prostate Treatment

Current enlarged prostate treatments include minimally invasive treatments including transurethral resection of the prostate and surgical options.

Prostate Artery Embolization

Prostate Artery Embolization a.k.a. PAE is an interventional radiology treatment seen as a new breakthrough treatment option for an enlarged prostate that is less invasive and produces fewer complications.

It improves patient symptoms, regardless of the enlarged prostate size before treatment.

PAE is a relatively painless, outpatient procedure offering less risk, less pain and less recovery time than traditional surgery.

Procedure

The PAE procedure involves the insertion of a catheter into the femoral artery and guided to the prostate artery on both sides of the enlarged prostate.

Once positioned next to the prostate, microscopic spheres are delivered to block blood flow, causing the enlarged prostate to sink.

Interventional radiologists are the specialists best suited to perform PAEs, given their knowledge of arterial anatomy, their experience with micro-catheter techniques and their expertise in other embolization procedures.

Study

Non surgical PAE Enlarged Prostate treated with Prostate Artery Embolization and medicated with Prostacet78 enlarged prostate patients underwent PAE.

They were categorized into 3 different analysis groups based on enlarged prostate size, i.e., less than 50 cubic centimeters, between 50-80 cubic centimeters and greater than 80 cubic centimeters.

PAE effectiveness was evaluated at 1, 3 and 6 month post treatments.

Results

The PAE treatment of 96% of the patients, i.e., 75 of the 78, was considered successful technically, with both blood vessels leading to the enlarged prostate blocked.

Improvement in symptoms and quality of life was found in all 3 analysis groups, without significant differences in outcome among the groups.

No change in sexual function was reported.

The low rate of PAE side effects was attributable to the treatment conduct via the femoral artery instead of through the urethra or penis.

Before and After PAE Enlarged Prostate treated with Prostate Artery Embolization and medicated with Prostacet

Benefits

Men with enlarged prostates smaller than 50 cubic centimeters or larger than 80 cubic centimeters cannot be treated through traditional methods.

PAE offers them an alternatively effective treatment that results in reduced risk of bleeding, urinary incontinence or impotence.

Conclusion

More research is needed to show PAE efficacy at 1 year and beyond as study data demonstrates only continued symptomatic improvement 6 months after treatment.

Additional studies, involving randomized, prospective research, are required to compare the safety and efficacy of PAE in other commonly performed enlarged prostate treatments.

High quality clinical research need to be performed to expand the number of patients studied, extend the duration of follow-up and compare the PAE procedure versus existing surgical therapies.
